JUBA — The South Sudan National Police Service said they are still investigating the killing of engineer Conty Okot, who was murdered along the Custom–Rock City Road in Juba.
Okot was brutally murdered by security operatives in cold blood on Monday, 19 January 2026, between 7 and 8 a.m. along the Custom-Rock City Road in Juba while travelling in his official government vehicle.
Maj. Gen. Daniel Justin, police spokesperson, said he did not yet have information on how far the investigation had gone.
“Well, first of all, in regard to the case of the engineer, now I don’t have any information about how far the case has gone. But since you have my contact, I will follow it up to update you. There is no problem about it,” Maj-Gen Justin told reporters in Juba on Friday.
He did not indicate whether any suspects had been arrested linked to the killing of the ministry of petroleum official.
“The general situation in the country is relatively calm. There are cases here and there,” he said.
He said police had recently recorded another murder in the Bilyang area of Gumbo Shirkat in Juba.
“In regard to the issue of Binyang, actually the suspects are known, those who we are still investigating. We have not arrested anybody,” he said.
Maj. Gen. Justin added that police had previously arrested some suspects in the area but said criminal activity was still continuing.
“There are activities of some criminals in the area, especially with the farmers and then those who usually go looking for charcoal and so on,” he said.
He also said a civilian was shot dead in Paloch and that the suspect had been arrested.
“There was a killing in Paloch; a civilian was shot, the suspect was arrested, and the investigation is ongoing,” he said.
In Renk, police said they intercepted people accused of trying to smuggle marijuana, locally known as Bangi, into the town.
“There is a case of illicit drugs; they were caught while trying to sneak into Bangi, the town,” Maj.-Gen. Justin said.
He also spoke of an ambush between Mangala and Mogiri, where a driver was shot and later died while being taken to the hospital.
“The driver was actually shot and then another person. Our forces on the road, when they reached them, managed to assist those who were injured,” he said.
“The driver was escorted to Juba Teaching Hospital, and then the death occurred in the process,” he added.
Police further said they had received 31 South Sudanese deported from Sudan through the Joda border crossing in Renk, as well as seven others deported from Egypt.
He said none of the deportees appeared to be seriously ill.
“Usually, the challenge comes up when they have some medical problems. But among the 31, nobody was suffering from anything. They were okay,” he said.
