JUBA – South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday left Juba for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Summit.
Speaking at Juba International Airport, Press Secretary Lily Adhieu Martin, said during the summit, President Kiir is expected to participate in bilateral meetings with African leaders, including the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Martin said the meetings aimed at fostering deeper cooperation and strengthening relations between South Sudan and other nations.
She said Kiir is also expected to update the summit about the implementation of the 2018 peace deal, the influx of Sudan’s refugees in the country, and issues of climate change.
“President Kiir’s participation in the summit demonstrates South Sudan’s commitment to regional cooperation, focusing on peace, security, and economic development for the African continent,” said Martin.
Kiir was seen off at the Juba International Airport by the First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar, among other officials.
The summit will address key political, economic, and social issues affecting the continent.
It will be held under the theme “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” from 15 to 16 February 2025 in Addis Ababa.
It will bring together heads of state and government from all 55 AU member states, alongside leaders from international organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the private sector.
