JUBA-South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir Mayardit, on Thursday ordered Juba City Council, and security organs to conduct an investigation into the cause of the fire that gutted parts of Juba’s biggest market, Konyo-Konyo.

Konyo-Konyo market, the busiest and oldest market in Juba, caught fire this afternoon, causing devastating destruction to over 56 shops and killing one person.

Lily Adhieu Martin Manyiel, presidential press secretary, said President Salva Kiir Mayardit has learned with dismay that the fire has caused huge losses to traders in the market.

“His Excellency, President Salva Kiir Mayardit, has learned with dismay and concern of the unfortunate fire incident that broke out earlier today at Konyo Konyo Market in Juba,” Adhieu said in a statement issued on Thursday.

Adhieu said the preliminary report indicated that the fire has caused significant damage to several shops and stores.

“Saddened by the loss suffered by the traders and business owners, His Excellency the President sends his heartfelt sympathies to those affected by this unfortunate incident,” she said.

She said the president encouraged traders whose shops, and property, were destroyed by the fire outbreak to remain strong during this difficult time.

“He has directed the Juba City Council and relevant security agencies to assess the extent of the damage and investigate the cause of the fire thoroughly.”

He said the president instructed Central Equatoria State to put in place measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
