The deadly fighting broke out between members of the Malual and Abang clans, both communities from Kolnyang Payam. According to officials, the violence erupted on Tuesday at around 4:00 PM after a misunderstanding during a social gathering involving youth from the two clans.
Speaking to the media from the state capital on Wednesday, Bor County Commissioner Samuel Ateny Pech confirmed the death toll, warning that the number could rise because some of the injured remain in critical condition.
“The incident happened at around 4 PM when a group of young girls were dancing along the roadside. A group of young men approached them, and a misunderstanding followed, leading to the beating of one of the girls,” Pech said.
He explained that when the girl’s brother stepped in to question the assault, tensions quickly escalated into open violence between the two groups, eventually drawing in more people from both communities.
According to the commissioner, 15 people were wounded during the clashes. Some victims sustained gunshot injuries, while others were beaten with sticks and other objects. All those injured were rushed to Bor State Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
Pech said the fighting lasted for nearly 40 minutes before joint security forces intervened and managed to restore order.
“The joint forces have contained the situation, and we are now working to arrest those responsible. Community leaders will also be involved as part of the investigation process,” he added.
Authorities have since deployed additional security personnel to Kolnyang Payam to prevent further violence and reassure frightened residents.
Officials also called on local communities, especially young people, to remain calm and resolve disputes through peaceful dialogue rather than revenge attacks.
The incident has left many residents shaken, with tensions reportedly still high in the area as families mourn the victims and await further action from authorities.
