BOR – A Uror County lawmaker in South Sudan’s Jonglei State Legislative Assembly has urgently called on state authorities and humanitarian health organizations to address the county’s dire healthcare crisis.

Wany Bum Makhor, Member of the Jonglei State Parliament representing Uror County, said the county is facing a rapidly deteriorating health crisis, with a severe cholera outbreak and widespread waterborne diseases overwhelming its already fragile healthcare infrastructure.

Wany has issued an urgent call for immediate intervention from the state government, humanitarian health partners, and the Uror County community.

“This crisis has overwhelmed the already fragile health infrastructure in the county and calls for immediate intervention from the state government, humanitarian health partners, and the wider Uror community,” said Makhor.

According to Makhor, Uror County has long suffered from a lack of proper and functional health facilities, relying heavily on non-governmental organizations even after South Sudan’s independence.

He said the chronic dependency has left the population vulnerable, with many patients enduring arduous journeys to Nyirol County (Lankien) for medical attention, often with tragic consequences.

“Presently, health services are partially or entirely under the Community Mission for Development (CMD), a national organization with limited capacity that is unable to effectively serve the entire county,” said Makhor.

Makhor highlighted a promising local initiative by the Uror Women’s Association to raise funds in Juba to construct the initial structure of the hospital, comprising three wards with three rooms each.

“The Uror Women’s Hospital (Cie Maan Kei) in 2022, the Uror Women’s Association, led by Chairlady Nyamile Rial Wuol, successfully raised funds in Juba to construct the initial structure of the hospital, comprising three wards with three rooms,” said Makhor.

He further added that the facility remains incomplete, lacking essential infrastructure such as water supply and fencing.

Makhor appealed to Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok’s state government, humanitarian health partners, and the global Uror community to unite in completing and operationalizing the Uror Women’s Hospital.

“I am therefore urgently calling upon the state government under Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok, humanitarian health partners and the Uror community across the globe to unite in complementing and supporting the completion and operationalization of the Uror Women’s Hospital,” said Makhor.

He further implored the Jonglei State Ministry of Health and the Uror County Health Department to collaborate and engage international humanitarian organizations with the necessary capacity and expertise to deliver sustainable healthcare services across the entire county.
