AWEIL-A military officer with the South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) died from injuries sustained after he leaped from a moving military truck to recover 18,000 South Sudan Pounds that had been blown away by the wind in Aweil West County of Northern El Ghazal State.
The deceased, identified as Captain Atem Akok, 55-year-old, was assigned to Division 5 based in Wau. He died on Monday while on his way to his hometown in Aweil West County.
Mr. Philip Agany Thiep, the Nyamlel County Police Inspector, told Sudans Post on Tuesday that the officer passed unexpectedly while trying to retrieve his 18,000 South Sudan Pounds.
“The SSPDF officer died between Pantiit and the bridge as they headed towards Aweil; in the process, the wind blew away some money estimated at around 18,000 SSP. On seeing that, he jumped away and broke his neck,” said Agany.
Agany said the deceased suffered a neck injury when he fell while hopping off the moving pickup truck. He was rushed to Nyamel Hospital, but died of internal bleeding.
“The boy who was a pedestrian on the main road picked up the money, and the officer jumped out of the vehicle to pick up the money, as he tended to reach out to the boy, and he jumped away, and in the process he broke his neck instantly. The injury caused internal bleeding, which led to his death,” he explained.
He claimed that the deceased’s and the driver’s negligence caused the accident.
