NYIROL – The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) has regained control of Riang Payam in Nyirol County of South Sudan’s Jonglei State following a Monday military operation, said the office of Commissioner James Bol Makuei.

A press statement from the Office of the Commissioner issued late Monday confirmed that the area—previously occupied by elements of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-in-Opposition (SPLA-IO)—has been recaptured by the national army.

The county leadership condemned the actions allegedly carried out by SPLA-IO elements in Riang Payam, describing them as a serious threat to peace and stability in the area.

According to the statement, the security situation in Riang Payam is now calm following what authorities described as a successful military operation, with government forces maintaining full control.

Local authorities urged civilians to prioritize their safety by avoiding any association with SPLA-IO elements and keeping away from areas where opposition forces may still be present. Civilians currently in locations occupied by SPLA-IO elements were also advised to evacuate to prevent potential harm.

“The leadership emphasizes that politically motivated actions that threaten peace and stability within our communities will not be tolerated,” the statement read.

The county administration further reassured residents that government forces have no intention of harming civilians or peaceful communities. However, it warned that firm action would be taken against individuals or groups seeking to undermine the government or violate the peace agreement signed by all parties.

The announcement was issued from Pading headquarters, as authorities called on the local population to remain calm and cooperate with security forces while operations continue in parts of the county.

Nyirol County has experienced repeated insecurity in recent months, with local leaders and residents calling for sustained peace and greater protection of civilians amid ongoing political and military tensions in Jonglei State.
