AWEIL – Authorities in Aweil West County of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State are holding three suspects accused of strangling and raping a 15-year-old girl.
The incident occurred as the victim returned from a party early this week.
The county Police Inspector, Phillip Agany Thiep, said three men waylaid the girl in the company of her boyfriend at Ciel-kou village and raped her in the process.
The victim has attempted to return to the party venue on realizing she was unsafe.
“The three young men followed her, strangled and acted on her. The young woman was then rushed to Nyamlel hospital for treatment,” said Agany.
He said the suspects would be arraigned in court once the victim recovers.
The Deputy Director of Nyamlel health facility, Lual Khamis confirmed the incident.
He said the victim was positively responding to treatment, pending the other tests.
“We are carrying out the examinations to know the health status of the perpetrators. After she her situation is salvaged, then other methods such as psychological remedy or psycho-social support are rendered,” said Khamis.
Article 17 of the South Sudan constitution defines a child as anyone under the age of 18, and further states that the best interests of the child will be protected in all matters related to his or her life, and that they should not be subjected to exploitative practices or abuse.
