The incident reportedly occurred on August 9, 2026, at 4:00 am when suspected armed youth from neighboring Unity State attacked Ariec cattle camp in Tonj North County and allegedly raided an unspecified number of livestock.
Warrap State Information Minister William Wol Mayom Bol said the attack on the Ariec cattle camp left 60 people dead, including 37 from Pan-Ariik, 11 from Apuk Padoc, and 15 suspected criminals from Unity State.
“Both separate attacks resulted in the killing of 60 people: 37 from Pan-Ariik, 11 from Apuk Padoc, and 15 Nuer criminals who orchestrated the attack targeting the Ariec cattle camp,” Wol said.
Wol said the 50 injured victims are receiving medical treatment at Athieng-Puol Primary Health Care Unit.
“On the other hand, 50 individuals were wounded in the clashes, whereby 17 amongst them have been transferred to Wau for specialized treatment while the rest are admitted at Athieng-puol PHCU,” he said.
“Our hearts pour out to the families who lost loved ones, and we stand in solidarity with the affected community during this difficult time.”
Wol described the violence as a “senseless” act and a direct threat to ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.
He said authorities in Warrap and neighboring Unity State are working to take immediate action to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Wol said the Warrap State government under the leadership of Amb. Bol Wek Agoth has directed the immediate deployment of the SSPDF and the organized forces to the affected areas to restore order, protect civilians, and prevent further retaliatory attacks.
“The Warrap State government condemns in the strongest possible terms the brutal attack perpetuated by armed Nuer criminals in Ariec cattle camp in Tonj North County on August 9, 2026, at 4:00 am, resulting in the tragic loss of lives and the looting of property and an unspecified number of livestock.”
Cattle-related violence has been a recurring source of insecurity in Warrap State, particularly in areas where communities depend heavily on cattle for livelihoods, wealth, and social status.
Conflicts often arise over cattle raiding, revenge attacks, access to grazing areas and water points, and disputes over migration routes.
The violence can involve armed youth from neighboring communities and may escalate when cattle raids are followed by retaliatory attacks.
Such cycles of revenge have contributed to deaths, injuries, displacement, and loss of livestock while also disrupting farming and humanitarian activities.
Warrap has also experienced tensions involving neighboring states, including Unity State, where seasonal cattle movements can bring communities into contact and increase the risk of clashes
