Following the incident, Malok’s 24-year-old younger brother, Machot Makuei Awur, took his own life by hanging after failing to locate his elder brother.
Rumbek East County Commissioner Zechariah Malual Anyuon confirmed the events, stating that Malok and his father were engaged in a discussion that escalated into violence. Malok struck his father twice on the head with a stick. The father was rushed to Rumbek State Hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following morning.
Upon receiving the news, Commissioner Anyuon visited the scene and learned of Machot’s suicide. According to eyewitnesses, Malok was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the attack, which contributed to the fatal beating. Similarly, Machot’s distress over his brother’s actions and his inability to find him led to his decision to take his own life.
Anyuon stated that security forces were actively pursuing Malok, who fled the scene. He has instructed local authorities, including those in neighbouring Akot Payam and nearby villages, to remain vigilant and search for the suspect.
“We are searching suspected houses and coordinating with local youth to apprehend the culprit,” he said.
Daniel Laat Kon, the state coordinator for the Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation (CEPO), described the incident as deeply unfortunate. He noted that the family buried the father before learning of Machot’s suicide.
“This is a tragic situation, and we urge the family to remain strong and leave the matter to the authorities,” Kon said. He emphasised the need for security personnel to apprehend Malok and bring him to justice.
Mr. Kon also highlighted alcohol as a contributing factor, noting its growing influence among youth in the region.
“Alcohol, combined with access to weapons, is fueling violence and killings in our state,” he said. He called on the community to respect resolutions aimed at curbing such issues. He urged authorities to address the underlying causes of violence amid ongoing efforts to locate Malok and ensure justice is served.
