AWEIL — A tragic incident has left a family and community in mourning after a single mother died from injuries sustained in a fall while gathering wild fruits from a tree in Aweil town of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, according to a state official.

The incident took place last week in Pan-Kar village in Tiar-Aliet payam of Aweil South County, when a 40-year-old single mother of five children fell from a tree and died while collecting wild fruits.

Simon Lual Buk, the Aweil South County’s Information Director, told media on Sunday that the 40-year-old mother of five died from injuries sustained when she was struck in the ribs by tree branches during her fall.

“The incident happened on Wednesday when a 40-year-old mother of five children died while collecting the fruits of the tamarind tree,” said Lual.

The deceased, Lual, described as a hardworking and caring mother, was reportedly supporting her children through small activities, including collecting and selling wild fruits.

“She is a vulnerable mother who is handling her family singlehandedly, as she lost her husband, who left behind 5 children.”

He described the incident as a tragic accident and urged the public to exercise caution when climbing trees, especially during the fruiting season.

“I urge the community at large to remain vigilant while climbing trees and be supportive to those struggling to make ends meet alone but can’t afford it. They would rather be helped or supported among people,” he said.

Akot Mawic, the Chairperson of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission of Aweil East County, announced that the organization has recently initiated a five-year project aimed at helping vulnerable communities achieve self-reliance.

“The project will provide support to vulnerable individuals in the areas of water and sanitation activities. Also in April, the CBI, Christina Blin Mission, will offer treatment for individuals suffering from cataract disease and eye infections in the county,” stated Mawic.

The community remains in shock, with many describing the incident as a bizarre and heartbreaking loss that turned a simple fruit craving into a fatal tragedy.
