Two killed, three critically injured after traders ambushed in Tonj South

The victims were traveling to Manyang-Ngok Payam on a rickshaw—locally known as a tuk-tuk—after purchasing goods from a market day when they were attacked by unknown gunmen. According to police, the traders had loaded their commodities onto the vehicle and were sitting on top of the goods when the assailants opened fire.

Fisherman killed, two injured in Gogrial East suspected cross-border attack

KUAJOK – At least two local traders have been confirmed dead and three others left in critical condition following an ambush on Tuesday evening in Tonj South County, Warrap State, raising fresh concerns over worsening insecurity in the area.

The victims were travelling to Manyang-Ngok Payam on a rickshaw—locally known as a tuk-tuk—after purchasing goods from a market day when unknown gunmen attacked them. According to police, the traders had loaded their commodities onto the vehicle and were sitting on top of the goods when the assailants opened fire.

Marko Mawien Madut, the Inspector of Police in Tonj South County, confirmed the incident in an interview with Mayardit FM, a local radio station based in neighbouring Twic County. He said the attack occurred at around 4:00 p.m. as the traders were returning from the market.

“What happened is that the local traders bought their commodities of all types and put them into a rickshaw (tuk-tuk). While on their way, they were waylaid and shot at around 4:00 p.m.,” Madut said.

He added that two people died instantly at the scene, while three others sustained life-threatening injuries and were rushed for medical attention. Security forces have since been deployed to the area, but no arrests had been made by the time of reporting.

“The attackers fled, and we have sent forces to the scene. So far, nobody has provided concrete information about the shooting,” Madut noted, adding that police are working to track down the perpetrators.

The incident highlights the growing insecurity facing local communities in Tonj South and surrounding areas, where armed ambushes and roadside attacks have become increasingly common. Residents say traders and travelers are now at heightened risk, particularly on rural routes with limited security presence.

Just last week, a similar ambush was reported in Ajak-Kuac Payam, where a driver was seriously injured after gunmen attacked his vehicle. The recurring incidents have intensified fears among residents and disrupted local trade activities, a vital source of livelihood for many families.

Observers warn that the continued violence underscores broader security challenges confronting the country amid ongoing political tensions. Analysts say without stronger intervention from authorities and sustained efforts to stabilize affected regions, such attacks could further erode public confidence in state protection mechanisms.

For now, the community in Tonj South is mourning the loss of the two traders while awaiting justice for yet another deadly attack.
