AWEIL – A University of Juba student has died following a road accident in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, after a truck struck a motorbike carrying four brothers on their way to Aweil Town.

The victim, identified as Wol Garang Wek, 30, was a student of Information Technology at the University of Juba. He was travelling with his three brothers from Nyamlel Town in Aweil West County to Madhol Hospital near Aweil Town on Sunday when the accident occurred.

According to local sources, the brothers were heading to Madhol Hospital to seek medical treatment for their elder brother, Majok Garang Wek. The four men were travelling on a single motorbike when they were hit by a Sino truck at Maluil-Akong Boma, before reaching Aweil Town.

Confirming the incident, Colonel Abuk Maria, Deputy Director of Traffic Police in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, said the crash happened as the motorbike attempted to overtake the truck.

“The four brothers were riding on one motorbike and were travelling to Madhol Hospital. As they tried to overtake a truck ahead of them, the motorbike was struck,” Maria told Sudan Post.

She identified the brothers as Majok Garang Wek, Wol Garang Wek, Deng, and Lual Big, a well-known local artist. Wol Garang died from injuries sustained in the crash, while the other three brothers were rushed to Aweil Civil Hospital for treatment.

Maria noted that overloading the motorbike may have contributed to the accident.

“We suspect that the motorbike was carrying excessive weight. One of the riders died following complications from the crash,” she said.

The driver of the truck has been detained as police investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

On Monday, residents of Aweil expressed shock at the death of Wol Garang, whose passing has drawn condolences from the community. The Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Charles Madut Akol, accompanied by members of his cabinet, visited Aweil Civil Hospital to check on the injured survivors, including Lual Big.

Traffic authorities have urged road users to exercise caution and avoid reckless driving, particularly on busy public roads.
