Advocate Manawa Gabriel Makwach and Gum Anderia are seeking compensation for injuries and other losses sustained during the incident, their lawyer, Angelo Thon Pal, told reporters on Monday.
“The case goes back to 21st of November 2024. An incident that took place at around 7 in the evening at residential house of the former director of national security, General Akol Koor Kuc, who is still up to now under house arrest,” Pal said.
The two plaintiffs sustained injuries during an exchange of gunfire involving security personnel and were taken to hospital for treatment, Pal said.
“The two plaintiffs, advocate Manawa Gabriel and Madam Gum Anderia, got involved in that incident and sustained several injuries in different parts of their bodies and due to that, they were taken to a hospital for medical treatments and they have been under treatment for almost two years,” he said.
The plaintiffs submitted documents to a military investigation committee established following presidential directives in December 2024. The committee completed its work and sent a report to the presidency, but the victims had not received its findings, Pal said.
“After that, the committee concluded its work and the report was sent to the presidency. And up to the moment, there is no any result that has been received by the victims,” he said.
The plaintiffs subsequently pursued legal action against the ministry after receiving no outcome from the investigation. They notified the ministry through the Ministry of Justice before filing the civil suit, numbered 276 of 2026, Pal said.
The ministry was served with court documents and attended several hearings, but the parties failed to reach an amicable settlement, he said. The plaintiffs later asked the court to record their statements in the absence of the ministry’s representative.
Manawa is seeking $260,150 in material compensation, while Gum is claiming $81,000, bringing their combined demand to $341,150. They are also seeking moral damages, medical expenses, court fees and legal costs.
The National Medical Commission assessed Manawa’s disability at 60%, Pal said. Gum is seeking compensation for her medical expenses and other losses sustained during the incident. The amount of any moral damages would be assessed by the court, he added.
The court had been scheduled to deliver its judgment on Monday but postponed the ruling until Tuesday, October 27, because of the presiding judge’s busy schedule, Pal said.
Akol Koor has remained under house arrest since November 2024 and has not been charged or brought before a court.
The judgment will determine whether the plaintiffs are entitled to compensation from the ministry and, if so, the amount to be awarded.
