JUBA — At least 6 people were killed and 16 others wounded in deadly inter-communal fighting in South Sudan’s Warrap state on Saturday, a government official said.

Warrap State’s Ministry of Information said in a statement issued on Sunday that the renewed violence erupted between the Thiik and Akok communities of Nyapagok Payam in Tonj East County.

“A heinous incident reported from local authorities elaborated that a violent confrontation erupted between the Thiik and Akok communities at Nyapagok Payam in Tonj East County, resulting in the loss of six lives and injuries to 16 others,” it said.

It said the incident occurred at approximately 4:33 am on 17 May 2025 in Nyapagok Payam.

“According to the county authorities, the clashes were reportedly sparked by earlier hostilities between the two communities in Payam. The situation escalated, leading to the violent confrontation.”

It said Warrap Deputy Governor Aluel Garang Garang strongly condemned the violence while urging the communities of the Thiik and Akok to refrain from further attacks.

“The state government, led by Acting Governor H.E. Aluel Garang Garang, strongly condemns the violence and urges the people of the Thiik and Akok communities to remain calm and work towards a peaceful resolution to their differences,” it said.

It said Ms. Garang pledged to work hand in hand with local communities to resolve the issue and promote peace and stability in the area.

“Garang also encourages two neighbors and sisterly communities to refrain from violence and return to their usual coexistence.”

It said Garang ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident to identify the root causes.

“The incident highlights the need for the government to take proactive measures to prevent conflicts between communities and promote peace and stability in the area.”

It added that “The government’s swift response to the incident is commendable, and it is essential to continue working with local communities to resolve outstanding issues and promote peace and stability.”
