Ayom Akol Wek, the paramount chief of Wath-Muok Payam of Aweil South County, told Sudans Post on Tuesday that a businesswoman discovered the infant on the Wath-Muok riverside on Sunday.
“The little newborn child was found by a woman who was moving along the riverside, and she informed the police about the incident. Now the baby is sent to Aweil, where she is being nursed,” said Akol.
According to Akol, the infant is safe and doing well.
“We are doing all we can to track down the mother, as it is hard to get her now, but we are asking the local inhabitants to check properly who the mother would be.”
The local chief blamed poverty for the increase in infant dumping instances.
According to him, moms are forced to leave their children because most fathers neglect their entire set of responsibilities.
After an unintended pregnancy arises, he exhorts the people to refrain from engaging in romantic relationships that lead to similar situations.
Last month, near the border town of Majok-Yithiou Municipality in Aweil East County, a woman discovered a baby boy abandoned in a forest.
