KUAJOK – Local authorities in Warrap State have said ten policemen were on Monday arrested on murder charges at the Turalei police station in Twic County for beating a 45-year-old woman to death, according to Radio Tamazuj.

Deng Atem Deng, the deputy police inspector in Twic County said the deceased, Ajith Malim, was beaten by the policemen at Martial Maper village in Aweng Payam and succumbed to her injuries.

“The woman was beaten to death by policemen at Aweng on Monday last week when they were looking for a suspect who they did not find at home and they then forced his mother to go with them and beat her to death,” Atem said. “Her name is Ajith Malim, aged 45. The ten policemen were arrested on Monday and are now jailed in Turalei.”

Meanwhile, Joseph Taban Agany, the Twic County executive director who is also currently acting as the commissioner, confirmed the incident and explained that the son of the deceased Ajith Malim stole a cow and that the policemen who beat his mother to death had been sent to apprehend him.

“It happened in Aweng Payam where a man stole a cow and sold it but the same cow was bought by a village resident who brought it back and the owner identified it and opened a case,” Acting Commissioner Agany said. “The court ruled that the cow has to be returned to the owner and eight police were sent to bring the cow and accused but the latter was at home and armed with a grenade and policemen failed to arrest him.”

He said ten fully armed policemen were sent back on the same day to arrest the suspect but he managed to escape.

“The same day, ten policemen were again sent with full force to accomplish the mission but the suspect escaped and policemen got his mother at home and beat her and she was taken to health center but unfortunately she died on Monday this week,” Agany said. “The ten policemen were arrested and there is no problem, the security situation is calm.”
