JUBA, JUNE 9, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – At least ten people have been wounded after an ammunition warehouse caught fire at the army’s 4th infantry division headquarters in Unity State capital’s Bentiu, local government officials and security sources say.

One senior local government official of Rubkona County told Sudans Post in a phone call this afternoon that the incident was first mistaken for fighting, forcing most residents to flee Shillak neighborhood of Rubkona town which is adjacent to the army division headquarters.

“The incident happened between 9:18PM local time that we thought there was fighting in Bahr military barrack. It later turned out that the ammunition warehouse had caught fire and ten people have been wounded,” he said.

The senior local government official further revealed that four of the victims are civilians and the six others are members of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), and that they are currently receiving treatment at local health facilities.

Speaking to Sudans Post separately, a security source said an investigation was ongoing and that the army headquarters at Bahr is trying to establish as to if changes at the logistics management at the division headquarters has connection with the incident.

“The head of logistics at the division headquarters was replaced yesterday and some other people were also removed with him, and new people took place. Now there are investigation as to if there is any connection between the two things,” he said.

“This is a very bad incident, and I am saddened with a woman whose leg is cut as a result of this incident,” he added.
