AL-GENEINA, MAY 19, 2023 (SUDAN POST) – At least seventeen people have been killed and unknown number has been wounded after fighting broke out on Friday morning between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in South Darfur State’s capital Nyala, residents and officials say.

Eyewitnesses told a Sudans Post reporter that fighting broke out at Al-Nahda neighborhood, just south of an army warehouse in Nyala during the morning hours of Thursday and subsidized at around 3:00PM local time, despite others saying there was still fighting in the neighborhood.

A local government official who requested not to be named for fear of reprisal said at least 20 civilians have been confirmed dead and unknown but huge number of civilians has been wounded and that efforts were underway to count the victims among the civil population.

“As I am talking, until this moment, 17 people have been confirmed killed today and we are working to also know the exact number because we expected the number to be higher among the civil population,” the official said.

An eyewitnesses said the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces “seems to be in control of the army warehouse, but we cannot confirm because we still hear sound of guns in the direction of the warehouse.”
