Speaking to Sudans Post this afternoon, Bech Marial, a student who was studying medicine under government scholarship at Egypt’s prestigious Tanta University, said Luiz Lueth Mangar, a third-year student at Alexandria University, and Atek Mawien Mawien, a second-year student at Cairo University, were deported aboard an EgyptAir plane.
“Yesterday, Luiz Lueth Mangar, a third-year student at Alexandria University, and Atek Mawien Mawien, a second-year student at Cairo University were deported from Egypt by our ambassador there,” Marial said in Juba.
“This is the last batch of the students who were under detention of Egyptian police ordered by our ambassador. Now we will count our losses because we have lost money, our mobile phones and jewelries,” he added.
The students were arrested in September after taking part in a large sit-in at South Sudan embassy where students demanded action from their government after they were told that their scholarships were partial and that they must pay for some services.
The Egyptian police were called in by the embassy triggering clashes in which at least nine students were critically injured. Ten others were arrested are have been the subject of deportation back to South Sudan.
The students are expected to attend a parliamentary hearing on Thursday were the specialized committee on education is expected to discuss their deportation and possible remedies to their studies which have now been interrupted.
