JUBA – The suspected armed rebels of the National Salvation Front (NAS) led by General Thomas Cirilo has set on fire two transport vehicles and passengers’ property looted along Yei-Kaya road over the weekend, Central Equatoria state government Information Minister Paulino Lukude said on Monday.
“Exactly the incident happened along Yei-Kaya road in Payawa boma which is part of Mongo Payam in Yei County. Two vehicles were burnt some kilometers away from the road and 8 passengers were on board but all of them are safe,” Lukude said in a phone interview on Monday.
“Their properties such as phones and money were looted and when we heard of the incident, the commissioner of Yei County sent the SSPDF soldiers to the crime scene and they managed to inspect the situation,” he added.
The Minister disclosed that the transportation has resumed after the incident.
“The attackers left after burning two vehicles to an unknown location but currently the transport line has resumed normally and there is no report of the incident reported again,” he said.
He accused the National Salvation Front led by Thomas Cirilo of carrying out attacks on transport vehicles.
“According the report from the fact finding committee and the people who were looted, these are NAS forces,” he said.
According to the Police Commissioner of Yei River County, Lujang Kamba, the civilians were intercepted on their way from Mugwo Market at Longamere just 12 miles from Yei town.
“The two vehicles were burnt while on their way from Yei to Monga market on Saturday,” Kamba said on Monday.
He said the passengers and drivers were then taken to the bush on gun points where they had their money and telephones collected.
In April 2021, one man was killed and three women wounded in an ambush along the Juba-Yei road by suspected members of the National Salvation Front (NAS) led by General Thomas Cirillo.
