BOR, NOV. 4, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – At least three people have been killed and three others have been wounded after suspected cattle raiders from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) attacked locals in Baidit Payam of Bor County in Jonglei State.
Speaking to Sudans Post this morning, Baidit Payam administrator Mayen Michael Amol said the attack took place on Friday afternoon and resulted in the raiding of over 120 herds of cows which he said have since been recovered by local youth.
“The attackers came at around 1:00PM raided a cattle camp in Baidit Payam in particular Mach-Deng and this is not their first time for this Murle bandits to attack Baidit, but it is the third time for it to happen,” he added.
The senior local government official revealed that the clashes over the cattle resulted in the killing of at least three people and wounding of three others from the side of the locals in Baidit County.
“Three people have been killed and three others have been wounded. We don’t know how many people have been killed from the side of the attackers and we are quite sure that there are casualties from the attackers’ side,” he said.
“The armed attackers have raided 123 herds of cattle, but the area youth manage to retrieve back the raided cattle after a long fight,” he added.
He called on GPAA’s government to keep on monitoring the movement of their armed youth for peaceful coexistence.
While stressing the role of the army and security forces to protect citizens, Akol said that there are no security forces in his Payam, making it easy for armed criminals from other states to attack and kill citizens in his Payam.
“The role of the national army is to defend the citizens and their properties and when to come on the ground there is no army and that’s why our youth volunteer themselves to protect themselves and their properties,” he said.
He urged GPAA authorities to investigate the killing of the three and other wounded.
In 2022, armed youth from Greater Pibor Administrative Area attacked Angakuei of Baidit leading to the killing of 32 people as well as the raiding of thousands of cattle.
