BOR, OCTOBER 17, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – At least three people were killed, and three others were wounded after youth from Duk County of Jonglei State clashed with youth from Twic East over burned fishing nets, government authorities said.

Speaking to Sudans Post on Monday, Twic East County Commissioner Chol Tor Gak said fighting begun after claims that a section of community youth from Twic East burned fishing nets belonging to youth from Duk County and that the fighting resulted in the killing of three people and wounding of three others.

“The incident occurred yesterday at 3:00PM which led to the death of three people and three others were wounded. The fighting was started after one of those fishermen found his fishing net had been burned down by unknown fisherman,” he said.

“He asked people there about where the fire came from, but they said they didn’t know where the fire originated and that is the cause of the fighting,” he said.

The top local government official further said that the wounded have been rushed to Jonglei State Hospital in Bor and are being treated there. He however said that no arrest has been made as authorities continue to hunt down culprits.

For his part, Jonglei State Police Commissioner Major-General Elia Costa Faustino confirmed the fighting but said details about the fighting have not yet been confirmed.

“There was fighting between two communities from Twice East and Duk counties and there are some people who died, and others wounded but still we didn’t get the final report so that we know how many people have been killed and wounded,” he told Sudans Post.

He further said that the police authorities have not launched investigations into the cause of the fighting but were working to do so.
