JUBA – At least three people were killed and several others injured in South Sudan on Monday when gunmen ambushed a vehicle carrying catholic faithful returning from Lowa in Magwi County along Juba-Nimule Road.

An eyewitness, who survived the attack, said most of the attackers were dressed in uniform, but some were in casual clothes.

The attack happened at 10 AM between Kopi and Sharara, according to the police spokesperson Maj. General Daniel Justin.

“The Noah car fell into an ambush and then the three got killed and the car was burnt in the attack with one person inside,” Gen. Justin told Sudans Post.

He said victims were returning from yesterday’s celebrations at Our Lady of Assumption Parish – Loa Magwi County to mark 100 years of existence.

Last week, two people including an 11-year-old girl were also killed in an ambush on the same road.

The Central Equatoria region has been plagued by violence due to an insurgency by the National Salvation Front (NAS) rebel group, which didn’t sign the 2018 peace deal aimed at ending the country’s bloody civil war.
