JUBA – The government of South Sudan’s Unity State has this morning executed at least three opposition commanders allied to General Stephen Buay Rolnyang, two day after their arrest by members of Sudanese security forces, Gen. Buay says.

The three officers are Maj-Gen. Nyuon Garang Kuol, Maj-Gen. Pur Ruop Kuol, and Brig-Gen. Gatluak Majiok Liey, the leading rebel officer blamed for the 22 July attack on Mayom County headquarters in which the county commissioner was killed along with 12 service members of SSPDF.

Sources in Khartoum told Sudans Post earlier on Monday that the three opposition commanders have been handed over to the government of South Sudan after a request was made and the office of the United State governor confirmed that they have been handed over to them.

In an email to Sudans Post this afternoon, Gen. Stephen Buay said the three commanders have been executed in Mayom this morning.

“Our officers who were handed to the governor of Unity state by Sudan Government have been summarily executed this morning in Mayom by the governor of Unity state,” General Buay said.

While Sudans Post cannot independently verify the allegations, several government sources in Bentiu said the three opposition commanders were executed near a river in Mayom town at 5 AM this morning.

In a separate statement, the South Sudan People’s Movement/Army claimed that the commanders were executed by being set on fire as a revenge to the death of Mayom County commissioner who was burned to death after his house was allegedly hit a mortar.

“The SSPM/A officers who were arrested by Sudan Rapid Support Forces (SRF) on 6/8/2022 and handed over to the governor of South Sudan unity state were summarily executed by burning them to death this morning at a place called Kaikang, Mayom county by governor of Unity state and Lt. General Thoi Chany, the SSPDF Assistant Chief of General staff without due process of law,” the statement reads in part.

“The SSPM/A leadership asks the UN and other human rights organizations to condemn and investigate this cowardly and inhumane act done by the governor of Unity state,” it added.
