The acting minister of information and communication, who is also the minister of culture, youth, and sports in Lakes State, William Koji Kerjok, confirmed to Sudans Post on Sunday that those involved in the shooting, which resulted in the death of the breastfeeding mother, have been arrested.
He said three of them have been apprehended as suspects.
“Two of them were from the SSPDF Tiger Unit, and one of them is from the police. They were among those being deployed in Rumbek East, particularly in the Pacong area, but very unfortunately, they involved themselves in such an incident,” he said.
He said it is now the law to hold them accountable for what they have done.
“Because, here in Lakes State, whatever you do wrong, you are not allowed to go free. The law is there to investigate and hold you accordingly. So, it was a very unfortunate incident seeing our organized forces involved in shooting passengers passing by in Lakes State,” he said.
He said where the suspects are being held is a security matter because what is very important here is that they have been arrested and will be held accountable in any competent courts where they are supposed to be investigated.
“Yes, once the incident happened, it is the role of the government to make sure the culprit, or the wrongdoers, are arrested and held accountable, and the government has to make sure the suspects are tried by all means to make sure these people are arrested. This is the first step to be taken by the government,” he said.
He said the government has identified those involved in the shooting of passengers.
“They were three; two of them were from the SSPDF Tiger Unit and the other one was from the police, and of course, the time for investigation and the time for court will be a different case. Otherwise, what is very important now is that they are being apprehended,” he said.
He said what he wants to share with the people of Lakes State is that our peaceful coexistence has to continue among us as people of Lakes State. Our peaceful coexistence has to continue among us with neighboring counties.
Protecting our passengers, whether they move at midnight or whatever time, is a full responsibility of our organized forces, and our organized forces should not really involve themselves in such incidents where they intend to shoot and kill. That very unfortunate incident, and such incidents should not be tolerated.
The civil society activist in Lakes State, Daniel Laat Kon, applauded the government for apprehending the perpetrators who shot and killed a breastfeeding mother of a nine-month-old baby in Rumbek East County.
