In a letter dated April 30, Brigadier General Charles Yokoju, Brigadier General Mike Abdu Alison and Brigadier General Wonyo Francis said they have abandoned the Machar-led group because the main armed opposition group has failed to fulfill the interest of the people of South Sudan.
“We the following commanders from SPLA-IO Brig Gen Charles Yokoju Nyibe, Brig Gen Mike Abdu Alison, Brig Gen Wonyo Francis would like to take this opportunity to declare our resignation from the leadership or movement of SPLA-IO under the command of Dr. Riek Machar Teny and join National Salvation Front under wise leadership of chairman and commander in chief Gen Thomas Cirilo Swaka with immediate effect from the date stipulated in this letter,” the trio said in the statement extended to Sudans Post.
“The SPLA-IO leadership has failed to fulfill the interest of the South Sudanese people and accept to implement peace protocols with aim of individual benefits through positioning themselves in the TGONU government instead of addressing the root cause of the problems by considering the country fundamental concerns,” they added.
The senior opposition commanders said killing and other abuse against civilians have continued in most parts of the world’s youngest country, despite a peace agreement that guaranteed Machar’s reappointment as the country’s First Vice President in February last year.
The statement also cited lack of commitment from the government to the implementation of the security arrangements provided for in the agreement saying soldiers have been abandoned in training camps without adequate food and medical supplies.
“Killing, raping, looting, properties destructions and displacement of innocent civilians continues in the whole country, despites the signed peace agreement with Kiir government, as a result of no political will in dialoguing amongst themselves as South Sudanese,” they said.
“The soldiers were abandoned without proper care or administration especially those who were cantoned, but serious insecurity, health, food and even lack of family responsibility care for their families but claiming we are peace as partners with the government,” they added.
It further stated that “corruption, nepotism and tribalism” coupled with policies made mostly along ethnic lines by the parties has led to a paralyzed economy “and therefore it’s unfair for us to continue with this government leadership that doesn’t put forth the interest of its own people.”
