PARIENG – Health authorities in the Ruweng Administrative Area have reported 47 new cases of measles affecting children, confirming an ongoing outbreak in Abiemnom County.
The state Ministry of Health confirmed the latest cases, identified between February 4 and 7, 2024.
This brings the total number of affected children to 97 since December, with no reported deaths across all Payams.
Elijah Wal Chol, Director-General of the Ministry of Health in Ruweng, spoke to Sudans Post on Thursday, confirming the new cases.
“We have identified 47 additional cases among children in the past two days,” Chol said. “They are currently receiving treatment at Abiemnom Hospital.”
“In December, we identified 50 cases. As of yesterday, February 7th, we have registered 47 new cases. That is 97 cases to date,” he added.
The local health official further said that “Today’s cases are not yet included, as they continue to increase daily.”
The outbreak primarily affects returnees and refugees who fled the conflict in Sudan and are living in difficult humanitarian conditions in South Sudan.
