BOR – At least 7 people were killed and four others injured in an attack that occurred in Duk County of Jonglei State on Thursday last week, a police officer confirmed.
Jonglei Police Commissioner Maj. Gen. Elia Costa told Sudans Post in an interview on Sunday that the attack occurred where women had gone to collect firewood.
“The attack took place on 22 February in Duk County and resulted in the killing of seven people including four women who were collecting firewood when the attack happened,” said Maj. Gen Costa.
“The state government does not yet know who the attackers are, but we are searching and investigating to establish their identity and so we will update the public”, he added.
Last month, 28 people were killed and 7,000 head of cattle was raided when assailants suspected to be from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) attacked cattle camps in Duk County’s Poktap town.
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) condemned the attack, calling on all the parties involved to cease the violence, avoid reprisal attacks and use peaceful means to resolve their grievances.
It urged Jonglei State and the GPAA authorities to enter into dialogue and bring the perpetrators to justice.
