JUBA – Acholi elders in South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria State formed a steering committee on November 14, 2024, with the aim of reviving the nearly forgotten chiefdom of the Acholi people.
The committee will oversee initiatives focused on preserving the cultural heritage of the Acholi community, with an emphasis on peace and development.
Elder Micha Oloya Olweny was elected to head the committee, with Abel Pa Okula as Vice Chair, Tonny Onyango as spokesperson, and Oyet Matthew as secretary. The committee also includes a treasurer, advisors, and seven additional members, bringing the total to 13 members.
Speaking at the gathering, Elder Micha emphasized that peace is essential for development to flourish within the community.
“Only through peace can development be realized in the various parts of our community,” he said, expressing his hopes for good health to continue the struggle to revive Acholi culture for the sake of peace and progress.
Elder Micha further stated that unity and struggle would help restore the culture and instill respect among the youth. He expressed belief that peace would lead to widespread development across the Acholi region, and that traditions—long in place before British colonization—could be recovered.
He also noted that the introduction of modern music systems in funeral rituals had interfered with traditional practices, adding that if efforts continue, the use of drums in these ceremonies could be restored.
Elder Micha concluded by calling on the Acholi community to embrace peace in order to achieve development.
