JUBA – A Juba-based South Sudanese activist is saying that the delay by the parties to the revitalized peace agreement in inaugurating the reconstituted parliament is an indication that the presidency does not value the legislature.
“It is an indication that the parties don’t value the parliament and don’t take it very seriously as a major component of governance in the country,” Rajab Muhandis, the executive director of the Organization for Responsive Governance, said, according to Eye Radio.
This comes one month after President Salva Kiir Mayardit reconstituted the transitional national legislative assembly.
The newly appointed 550 lawmakers have not however been sworn in and it remains unclear why the presidency is delaying the process that could mark beginning of the lawmakers’ work.
“Secondly, it is an indication of how the parties themselves are so submissive to their leadership in a manner that they don’t seem to have any concern even when the parliament is not running,” Rajab said.
