JUBA – At least five people were killed, and one child abducted in an attack on Akobo County, Jonglei State, on Monday, according to local authorities.

Puok Nyang Tutjiek, Akobo County Commissioner, blamed armed youth from the neighboring Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) for the violence that unfolded in Nyandit Payam headquarters early Monday morning.

“On May 13, 2024, at 5:00 AM local time, five people were killed, many others wounded, and a child abducted in Nyandit Payam headquarters by heavily armed Murle youth from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA),” Nyang said in a statement to Sudans Post on Monday.

Nyang reported ongoing heavy fighting outside Nyandit Payam as Akobo youth engaged the attackers, pushing them back towards nearby bushes.

“This attack surprised the Akobo community as we are diligently controlling our youth to refrain from responding to criminal attacks by Murle youth, in strict adherence to the peace agreement between the Greater Pibor Administrative Area and Jonglei,” Nyang said.

The commissioner strongly condemned the violence and urged GPAA authorities to take action to control Murle youth and prevent further attacks.

“My condolences to the families, friends, and relatives of those killed,” Nyang added. “I wish a speedy recovery to the wounded.”

Efforts to reach Greater Pibor Administrative Area Minister of Information, Abraham Kelang, for comment were unsuccessful.
