He visited his forces stationed at the Wadi Seedna military zone in Omdurman, marking his second trip to the city since a daring escape in August amidst a months-long conflict with the powerful Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Al-Burhan, the head of the Transitional Sovereign Council and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, met with senior commanders, including the controversial army figure Yasser al-Atta.
His office stated the visit’s purpose was to “assess the readiness of the forces to defeat the remaining elements of the RSF,” which currently holds control over much of Khartoum.
This return carries significant weight. Since the conflict with the RSF erupted in April 2023, al-Burhan had effectively been restricted to the General Command of the Armed Forces in central Khartoum.
His escape in August, a bold act, marked a turning point in the conflict. However, he hadn’t set foot in the army command since then.
His previous visit to the capital, also to Wadi Seedna, occurred in late October when he addressed the troops and accused the RSF of prolonging the war for their own gain.
Talks held earlier this month in Saudi Arabia between the two sides ultimately failed due to the RSF’s refusal to relocate outside Khartoum, a key demand from both the military and the government.
