The visit comes after months of deadly fighting in Sudan, during which al-Burhan was besieged inside the army headquarters in Khartoum by the rebellious paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
He was able to flee the capital last week and has since working from Port Sudan, the country’s temporary capital.
In a statement, the Transitional Sovereign Council said that al-Burhan would discuss bilateral relations and ways to enhance cooperation between Sudan and South Sudan.
“The President of the Council will hold discussions with President Salva Kiir Mayardit, related to the course of bilateral relations and ways to advance and enhance the prospects for cooperation between the two countries, and issues of common interest in addition to developments in the situation in Sudan.”
The two countries share a long border and have a number of economic and cultural ties.
The statement also said that al-Burhan would discuss the latest developments in the situation in Sudan. The country is currently facing a political crisis, an economic crisis, and a humanitarian crisis.
Al-Burhan was seen off at Port Sudan Airport by his deputy, Malik Agar, and Secretary-General of the Transitional Sovereign Council Mohamed Al-Ghali Ali as well as well as a number of senior government officials.
He was accompanied by acting foreign minister Ali Al-Sadiq, and the country’s intelligence chief, Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal.
The visit is expected to last for one day.
