Armed youth from Unity state clash with security forces, locals in Lakes State

RUMBEK – At least six people were killed, and two others were wounded on Wednesday in a clash between armed youth from South Sudan’s Unity State, and security forces and locals in Yirol East County of the country’s Lakes State.

Speaking to Sudans Post this afternoon, Lakes State Police Spokesperson Major Elijah Mabor Makuac said a group of armed raiders from Panyijiar County, Unity State, stole goats from Yinhkar village in Yirol East County on Wednesday.

“Security forces stationed in the area and young men from the area pursued the armed criminals in an attempt to recover the stolen goats,” Makuac said.

He added that the pursuing group was ambushed, resulting in the deaths of three soldiers on their side and the death of three from the side of the attacking armed youth. Two civilians were also seriously wounded.

Makuac condemned the attack, calling it “heinous” and urged the Unity State government to apprehend the criminals.

“We call on the government of Unity State for an immediate capture of these criminals and bring them to book accordingly,” Makuac said.

The senior police officer further urged Unity State to take stricter measures against border raids and attacks by armed groups.

“We are committed to ensuring peaceful neighborliness with the people and government of Unity State and all our borders,” Makuac added.

He further expressed condolences to the families of the victims and called for calm among residents of Yirol East County.
