RUMBEK – Armed youth suspected to have come from Rumbek North County in Lakes State attacked a military base in Malek Payam of Rumbek Central County, on Sunday, killing one security officer and wounding two civilians, police said.
Lakes State Police Spokesperson Major Elijah Mabor Makuac told Sudans Post in an interview on Monday that the attackers, from the Pakam community, raided the base and stole over 50 cattle.
“The cattle belonged to the Luanyjang community of Tonj East County, previously stolen by unidentified raiders,” Makuac explained.
“The Lakes State government was in the process of returning the cattle to their rightful owners when they were re-raided,” he added.
Makuac said authorities are engaging with Pakam community leaders to apprehend the attackers and recover the stolen cattle.
“Reports indicate three individuals died during the attack, but their identities remain unknown. Investigations are ongoing,” he said.
Makuac urged communities to refrain from violence.
“These attacks on government forces are a recurring problem in Lakes State. The government serves the people and works for their well-being. There is no reason to target security personnel,” he said.
“I urge anyone possessing firearms and contemplating violence against government positions to reconsider. We urge peaceful resolution of conflicts,” he added.
