In a statement, army spokesman Brig. Gen. Nabil Abdallah said that Al-Burhan “is in the operations room and participates in the battles himself.”
“There is no truth to what is being circulated about his leaving the country or participating in the summit of the neighboring countries of the Arab Republic of Egypt,” he added.
Abdallah’s statement came after social media activists reported that Al-Burhan had arrived in Cairo on Tuesday evening on the invitation of the Egyptian President Abdelfattah El-Sisi to participate in a meeting of Sudan neighbors organized by Egypt.
The summit is reportedly aimed at discussing the conflict situation in Sudan and how the stakeholders can help stop the bloodshed which has continued for months resulting in the displacement of millions and killing of thousands.
Abdallah said that the Cairo meeting only concerns the neighboring countries of Sudan where there would be no official representation of the country and that Al-Burhan will be represented by his deputy Malik Agar where Sudan participation necessary
“The summit is concerned with the neighboring countries of Sudan. The official representation of Sudan will be at the Russia summit and the delegation is headed by the Vice-President of the Sovereignty Council, Malik Agar,” it said.
The Sudanese army has been battling the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since mid-April.
The army also faces a threat from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), a rebel group that is active in the Blue Nile and South Kordofan regions.
