AWEIL – Authorities in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal state have said that a man has died at a military custody after an illegal arrest by members of the National Security Service (NSS) and the Military Intelligence (MI) in Aweil East County.

According to an eye witness quoted by the Juba-based ‘Talk of Juba’, the man was arrested at a local lodge in Warawar town of Aweil East County on Monday evening and was later on Tuesday morning found dead in custody.

“He booked the room and paid the money in the lodge. He then went to the market and when he returned to the lodge, the NSS officer who was accommodated in the same lodge prevented him from entering and then started calling personnel from the MI and police,” the eye witness said.

“They then took him to the custody at 11:45PM and in the morning, he was found dead. They have beaten him, he was given a bad torturing,” the eye witness who was not named in the report added.

For his part, the head of military police in Warawar Lieutenant Colonel Garang Garang confirmed the demise of the unnamed man and said four of the army’s members have been arrested and are being investigated for the death of the man.
