Aweil South County imposes curfew to curtail crimes ahead of Christmas

JUBA – Authorities in Aweil South County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, have implemented a curfew ahead of Christmas to curb crime and ensure peaceful festivities.

Speaking to Sudans Post on Wednesday, Aweil South Commissioner Luka Thel Thel said the stringent measures are designed to allow residents to enjoy the holiday season safely.

He observed that nighttime gatherings of young men and women often lead to fights and disruptions.

“We have realized that boys walk with girls a lot at night in the market and on the main roads, and these acts are prohibited,” Thel stated.

He added that he has consulted with local chiefs, youth groups, and other community associations, and they have endorsed the curfew.

The local government official said security forces will be deployed to enforce the curfew, with violators facing arrest and fines.

One resident, Lual Dut Awer, welcomed the decision, expressing that it was long overdue and will help address behavioral issues among young people.

He also mentioned the prohibition of “tight dresses,” suggesting the curfew is intended to promote a more conservative social environment.

Crime prevention is a key motivator behind the curfew, particularly addressing fights among young men.

The authorities have set a 9:00 PM curfew starting December 21^st, aiming to restrict nighttime activities and maintain order during the festive season.
