David Orupi, Eastern Equatoria deputy youth union leader, condemned the killing and called for immediate investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators.
He described the act as “very unfortunate” and expressed sadness over the loss of “an innocent youth friendly to all across the town of Torit.” Orupi urged the security forces to handle the incident, citing an “increasing number of criminals in the town.”
Torit Mayor Mustafa Albino Zachariah confirmed the incident and said an investigation has been launched. He noted that the victim appeared to have been overpowered by multiple assailants.
“We are investigating and will not let this go unaddressed. His motorbike, phone, and money were taken. The way he was hanged suggests there were many people involved. Judging by his build, he was a strong man; two or three people couldn’t have done this. It seems there were more than four, and they used an inner tube around his neck,” Zachariah said.
The mayor said he was informed of the incident around 5 a.m. by another boda-boda rider who discovered the body in the Malakia residential area.
“Around 5 a.m. this morning, I received a call from a boda-boda rider about a body dumped in Malakia, between the houses of Jalal and Almain Karah. I contacted my forces, who were surprised, as the town had been peaceful until then,” he said.
“Upon examining the body, it appeared he was hanged elsewhere and brought there, possibly on his own motorbike. The location of the hanging is unknown, as the motorbike tracks disappeared shortly after a bridge leading to Malakia from Burehutule. There were no tracks beyond where he was left,” Zachariah added.
Torit municipal authorities have recorded at least three killings this year, with no suspects identified in any of the cases.
