BOR – Authorities in Bor municipality of South Sudan’s Jonglei State are undertaking preventative measures to mitigate potential flooding as the rainy season intensifies in the state, officials said.

The Bor Municipal Council is reportedly working to clear drainage systems and reinforce vulnerable areas along riverbanks. The municipality is also aiming to raise awareness among residents in areas prone to flooding.

Speaking to Sudans Post in an exclusive interview, Bor Mayor Jacob Achiek Machar said the municipality was pooling its resources to protect residents and the town from flooding as the rainy season approaches.

“What makes us not to be on the accurate preparation is lack of the machines but for now we have one excavator, and grader and we are now requesting for the fuel to start our work of renovating dykes and clearing water drainage,” Achiek said.

He added that state authorities were committed to protecting the citizens of Jonglei state and their properties during the coming rainy season.

“We are taking early action to protect our communities, our team will soon go out there on the ground, we are working diligently to ensure that drainage channels are free of debris and that necessary reinforcements are in place,” Achiek stated.

He also mentioned plans to repair internal roads within Bor municipality using marram.

While specific details regarding the extent of the preparations are still emerging, this early action indicates a determined effort by local authorities to minimize potential damage and displacement caused by floods.

The municipality is also collaborating with local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community leaders to disseminate information on flood safety and preparedness.
