Bureau of standards hindered by financial constraints

JUBA – The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) faces significant challenges due to inadequate finances, as highlighted by the head of the institution.

Dr. Kuorwel Kuai Kuorwel, Chairperson of the Bureau of Standards, emphasized the limitations faced by the institution, particularly in terms of funding for essential resources such as testing equipment and staff mobility.

“Our main challenges revolve around inadequate financial resources, lack of testing equipment for our laboratory, and restricted staff mobility. When there’s a financial shortfall, it impedes our operations,” stated Dr. Kuorwel during a reception ceremony on Tuesday.

Highlighting the practical constraints, Dr. Kuorwel added, “There are instances when emergencies arise, and unfortunately, we lack transportation, even basic means like ‘Boda-Boda’ to swiftly respond to these situations.”

Building a robust Bureau of Standards necessitates considerable energy, financial backing, and a sufficient workforce, according to Dr. Kuorwel. He expressed hope for support from Dr. Bak, the Minister of Finance and Planning, to address these critical needs.

Addressing the importance of the Bureau’s role, Dr. Kuorwel underscored the aim to enhance market performance by ensuring compliance with standards, thereby safeguarding public health, safety, and environmental security.

“Our aim is to ensure that market goods meet the required standards, thereby safeguarding our population. We’ll also be initiating a system where the private sector or service providers we inspect contribute inspection fees, generating revenue as per the financial act,” he explained.

Established to uphold technical regulations and applicable standards for imports, the regulatory body plays a crucial role in preventing the influx of substandard goods into the market.
