JUBA – The Ceasefire Transitional Security Arrangement Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM) said on Friday it will release a report of its investigation into recent clashes in Nasir County of Upper Nile State.
The investigation follows reports of recent tension and violence between armed youth and South Sudan People’s Defense Forces, which resulted in significant displacement of residents.
The findings of this investigation are highly anticipated as they will provide insights into the causes of the conflict and potential steps for resolution.
Speaking during a CTSAMVM board meeting in Juba, Major General Yitayal Gelaw Bitew, Chairperson of the body monitoring the ceasefire, said they are preparing the report of their investigation into violations in Nasir for discussions.
“The results of this investigation are currently being prepared for discussion within the Joint Monitoring Coordination Office and CTSAMVM Technical Committee,” Gelaw said.
He said they recently deployed patrols to Nasir Town to investigate the worrying reports of armed clashes between armed youth and SSPDF soldiers.
The retired Ethiopian general said the reports of the investigation are in the final stage of discussion.
“Preliminary findings suggest that although tensions have decreased, considerable efforts to establish trust and confidence will be necessary to guarantee that the region remains calm,” he said.
He disclosed that they have deployed long-duration patrols to Western Bahr el Ghazal and Upper Nile to demonstrate CTSAMVM’s commitment to maintaining an operational presence across the country.
He also highlighted the rising number of attacks on humanitarian workers and travelers, reportedly carried out by the NAS rebels in Central Equatoria State.
“Today, we will discuss one violation report. We will also give updates on the armed attacks in Yambio that have resulted in the deaths of three security forces personnel and injuries to a further three security force members and two civilians,” Gelaw said.
