JUBA, APRIL 23, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – South Sudan’s civil society watchdog, the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), has hailed the government in its attempts to secure a ceasefire for the conflicting Sudanese parties.

The Sudanese conflict which begun on the 15th of April entered its second week yesterday with calls from the regional and the international community for end to violence to avoid what maybe one of the largest refugee crises in the region.

In a statement extended to Sudans Post, CEPO’s Executive Director Edmund Yakani urged leaders of Sudan to accept a, immediate ceasefire in order to ease delivery of humanitarian aid and to also open safe corridors for civilians.

The CEPO statement said it has already noticed that some member-states of the regional IGAD bloc are undermining the role tasked to South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit to lead efforts of IGAD to mediate between the warring sides.

“Our experiences of this political attitudes of some IGAD and AU leaders during the South Sudan peace mediation is bad and contributed to prolonging the peace mediation because lack of consensus among IGAD and AU,” Yakani said.

“CEPO is urging the IGAD member that is beginning to move to undermine South Sudan’s role in the mediation of the Sudan war to stop that immediately,” he added.
