CEPO hopeful on Sudan conflict as IGAD summit convenes in Djibouti

South Sudan’s civil society watchdog, the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has expressed hopes for end to Sudan conflict after the summit of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development commenced on Monday in Djibouti.

JUBA, JUNE 12, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – South Sudan’s civil society watchdog, the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has expressed hopes for end to Sudan conflict after the summit of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development commenced on Monday in Djibouti.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan, one of the mediators on Sudan conflict, left the country on Sunday heading to Djibouti where the IGAD summit on Sudan is now taking place and a statement from his office this afternoon said the meeting was being held.

Kiir’s office said that the president is “expected to give a comprehensive overview of the current situation in the Sudan, at the 14th Ordinary Session of the IGAD Assembly of the Heads of State and Government.”

In a statement, CEPO welcomed the meeting and expressed optimism for the IGAD to find a solution to end of the violence in Sudan.

“CEPO welcomed and appreciates the long  awaited IGAD head of states and governments summit on Sudan political crisis which is deadly to be handle in Djibouti today,” the civil society organization said in the statement extended to Sudans Post this afternoon.

Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of CEPO, urged the IGAD leaders to find a solution to the conflict in Sudan, saying that there is need to find an inclusive solution that does not sideline certain Sudanese political forces.

“Let IGAD leaders reached political consensus  for resolving Sudan political crisis through dialogue than guns. Any peace mediation should be inclusive where the warring parties and various Sudanese stakeholders to directly participate in the mediation process . Sudan political crisis requires concrete citizens driven political solutions than the mess political elites,” he said.

“It istime for the Sudan warring parties to respect the agreed upon ceasefire, humanitarian access and respect of rights of persons with disabilities in the face of the violence.

“It is realistic observed that persons with disabilities across Sudan in the face of the violence are face serious inhuman situation and humanitarian crisis in comparison to the other category of the society,” Yakani stressed.
