CEPO urges ‘immediate’ ceasefire over Mayom fighting

JUBA — A South Sudan civil society organization on Tuesday called on the parties to the ongoing violence in Mayom County of Unity State to have ceasefire to enable peaceful end of the political differences.

This comes after a government army convoy comprising eight vehicles was ambushed by Gen. Buay’s forces resulting in the killing of at least 40.

In a statement, the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) urged the parties to cease hostilities so as to stop the conflict and stressed that the country has been unstable.

“CEPO is urging the conflicting parties in Mayom county to observe ceasefire and stoping this fighting. The nation is tired of this fighting and it is clear now that gun clash in the country is more harmful and obstacle to peace and stability,@“ he added.

Edmund Yakani, “Executive Director of CEPO says this recent military confrontation in Mayom County is posing new trend of political armed violence between the forces of South Sudan People’s Army and SSPDF.”

He further called for “immediate ceasefire and dialogue among the conflicting parties in Mayom county. This trend at the particular moment is offering great threat to the pathway of transitioning the country from violence to peace.”
