JUBA, APRIL 30, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – South Sudan’s prominent activist Edmund Yakani has lauded the continued attempts by his country’s government in bringing the Sudanese warring parties to a negotiating table.
In a statement on Saturday, South Sudan’s ministry of foreign affairs said that it is working hard to convince the warring Sudanese generals for a ceasefire that would last longer in an attempt to bring them to a negotiating table.
Reacting to the foreign ministry statement, Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) welcomed the South Sudan government efforts and described it as encouraging.
“CEPO welcomes efforts by South Sudan in pushing the leaders of the Sudanese warring parties to respect ceasefires and acceptance of consultative political dialogue for seeking durable solutions to the Sudan political crisis. This is encouraging and motivating,” Yakani said.
“The leaders of the Sudan conflicting parties should opt to political dialogue than the continuous military confrontation. Military solutions to political crisis never gain apart from driving the warring to commit more human atrocities and destruction to properties,” he added.
The prominent activist further urged the Sudanese parties to learn from past experience and called on the South Sudan government to continue engaging the Sudanese leaders in a manner that include civil society and other stakeholders.
“The leaders of the Sudan warring parties should learn from the past experiences that made former President Omer Hassan el Bashir to being face war crimes charges. They are not far from this history if they continue steering military solutions to their political crisis,” he said.
“CEPO is urging the government of South Sudan to ensure the political mediation should be inclusive and with effective participation of Sudan civil society and other stakeholders to gain meaningful national-owned political settlement of Sudan crisis.
“Finally, CEPO is urging IGAD members to stop the practice of completing over resolution of political dispute in member state. Already some IGAD members are demonstrate acts of undermining the role of South Sudan as mediator to the Sudan crisis.
“This practice is always the point of weakness for IGAD collected efforts and actions for securing regional peace and stability,” Yakani stressed.
