JUBA – South Sudan’s civil society leader, Edmund Yakani, met with Vice-President for Youth and Gender Cluster, Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior, on Wednesday to discuss preparations for the upcoming December 2024 elections.

In a statement extended to Sudans Post, the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) – the civil society organization headed by Yakani – described the meeting as “remarkable and productive”.

It added that they also discussed ways to address the escalating subnational violence ahead of the elections.

“Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO, met with Her Excellency Rebecca Nyandeng, Vice President and Chair of the Gender and Youth Cluster, to discuss the country’s preparations for the upcoming national general elections in December 2024,” a statement from CEPO said.

“The meeting covered key topics such as the unification of forces, the constitutional making process, the population census, ensuring open civic and political space, and securing national funding for the elections and constitutional making process,” it added.

The statement further noted that the meeting addressed the recent increase in armed communal violence across the country.

“Both parties agreed that the leadership of the political parties council should take strong steps to ensure that the 35% quota for women and the inclusion of youth and persons with disabilities are enforced by the political parties,” the statement concluded.
