JUBA – South Sudan opposition leader Gabriel Changson Lew Chang has refuted claims that he is among South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) leaders vying for the position of Vice-President.

The opposition umbrella is entitled to one vice-president position from the five VP positions created by the 2018 revitalized peace agreement signed with the government.

Reports on social media on Tuesday circulated said there was internal wrangling within the opposition alliance over who should represent them in the presidency.

They include Changson, Josephine Lagu, Joseph Bakosoro and Dr. Lam Akol. Hussein Abdel Baggi was also included in the report.

However, in a statement this morning, Changson’s spokesman Wazir Michael Liah refuted the claims. Fine the full statement below:

Press release

On Tuesday, February 18, 2020, an unknown source published a press statement on social media, claiming that the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) had begin democratic process to elect their representative to fill the position of Vice President according to (R-ARCSS). He said that Hon. Gabriel Changson Chang told him that the security arrangements should be considered as the first topic before the political lobbying and the formation of the R-TGONU on 22 February 2020. The same source also claimed that two of the persons mentioned below (Gov. Joseph Bangasi Bakasoro, Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, Mr. Hussein Abdelbagi Ayii) wants Hon. Gabriel Changson to represent SSOA as Vice President.

We want to assure the people of South Sudan that, Hon. Gabriel Changson who is the Chairman and Commander in Chief of Federal Democratic Party/ South Sudan Armed Forces (FDP/SSAF) did not speaks to any unauthorized press media that always write things on social media. He can only speaks to authorized media that always publishes their statements on official website and not those unfounded social media that always want to tarnish the name and image of the people.

I am therefore informing anyone who came across such statement to treat it as unfounded and fabrication from those that want to tarnish our Chairman’s name….

FDP/SSAF had welcome the Presidency decision of reverting back the country to ten states and other pending issues can be ironed out while the R-TGONU formation is taking place.
