The initiative, spearheaded by the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), served as a platform for rebuilding trust and understanding between civilians and the military in the war-torn region.
Bereka Boma, like many other areas in Lainya County, bore the brunt of the devastating 2016 civil war that erupted in Juba and swept across South Central Equatoria.
The conflict resulted in widespread atrocities and forced countless civilians to flee their homes in fear for their safety.
The dialogue, held under the evocative theme “Bridging Divides: Fostering Unity for Peaceful Coexistence in Bereka Boma,” brought together a diverse group of 100 participants.
Local government representatives from Lainya County, paramount chiefs, religious leaders, youth groups, and women’s organizations actively participated in the discussions.
“This dialogue represents a significant step forward in the long road to healing for Bereka Boma,” said a spokesperson for CEPO. “The 2016 conflict left deep scars, and fostering trust between civilians and the military is essential for a peaceful and prosperous future.”
The initiative stemmed directly from the recommendations made by the Bereka Boma community itself during a previous engagement.
Recognizing the importance of improved civil-military relations, the community called upon CEPO to facilitate a dialogue specifically aimed at addressing this critical issue.
The County Peace Committee played a pivotal role in implementing the dialogue, working closely with CEPO and the IOM-led Consortium.
Local authorities and religious leaders of Lainya County also provided invaluable support, ensuring the initiative reflected the needs and concerns of the community.
The hope is that this dialogue will serve as a catalyst for positive change in Bereka Boma.
By openly addressing past grievances and fostering a spirit of cooperation, the community can move forward and build a more peaceful and secure future.
